Nicole Crescenzi
Victoria News reporter Nicole Crescenzi came to Camosun College to discuss the importance of adaptability with her experience in communications and journalism. Her life has given her many obstacles in which she could not communicate properly, this showed her the importance of expressing yourself and lead her to her career. She eventually received a masters in journalism, bachelors in anthropology, and minor in professional writing. She began her career interning which eventually lead her to her current job at Victoria News.
Crescenzi believes that to be successful in the fields of communication or journalism, you must “be a chameleon.” She has worked in radio, television, magazines, and newspapers. Crescenzi considers the different sources beneficial to her career. She also believes photography, videography and any other skills along those lines are assets.
Even though Crescenzi believes in journalism you “need to do a little bit of everything,” she thinks this is good because it will make sure you are always learning and developing your skills. Your role and medium of broadcast will always change in journalism. She began with working on the radio and as an associate producer, but soon became a multi-media journalist. Her current job incorporates many different types of broadcast. Not only is she supposed to put out 4 written stories a day for Victoria News, but she also needs to remember to do things through out the day such as tweet for the company and keep up with social media. Crescenzi also produces pictures and videos.
There is a constant change in journalism. The more skills and experience you have in all aspects of this field will help you adapt and grow your career. Skills such as photography, videography, and social media are helpful. Also experience in all forms of communications such as radio, tv, magazines, and newspapers will all help. She believes you “need to be flexible if you want a career in communications or journalism.”
