Victoria B.C. has a very mild climate compared to the rest of Canada. With dry summers and rainy winters, the easy weather would seem ideal for bike rides, but the reality is there is not many cyclists compared to motor vehicles.
If you find yourself driving, walking, or cycling down Pandora street you will most likely notice bike lanes that are separate from the motor vehicle lanes. Victoria is a city where you will see a cyclist or a few while driving, but this does not justify spending millions and millions of dollars for bike lane expansion. There is simply not enough cyclists to be spending so much time, money, and space on bike lanes. We have spent enough money on this and do not need to expand it anymore.
The majority of people who commute drive vehicles or take the bus. Bike lanes make it more difficult to do so. Not only does the construction of lanes add to commuting time, but the finished lanes make traffic slower as well, even when there are no cyclists on the lane.
Not everyone is physically able to ride a bike. People such as the disabled, elderly, or children will most likely not use these lanes. Bikes are not accessible to everyone but vehicles are.
I believe the people who are keen on the idea of bike lanes are wanting to help the environment. Instead of putting so much money towards bike lanes for a small group of people, we should put money towards lowering the cost of eco-friendly cars. Everyone can use these vehicles, it is far more inclusive. If we put more money towards lowering the price of these cars and having more charging stations available, all kinds of commuters could start using eco-friendly vehicles.
Thanks CJ!
